Hempstead, NY – Lana Zonjic had 23 kills and 12 digs to lead George Mason to a four-set win over Hofstra on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) volleyball action at the Hofstra Fitness Center.
Sophomore Kelsie Wills led Hofstra with 15 kills and tied for team-high honors with 14 digs, but the Pride fell to 14-10 and 2-3 in league play with the loss. The Patriots improved to 4-13 and 2-2 in conference with the win.
The double-double was Wills' team-leading 11th of the season.
Set scores were 25-22, 25-19, 22-25 and 25-17 in favor of George Mason.
Sophomore Emily Burke continued her solid play as of late as the Staten Island native had 12 kills in the match, marking her second straight contest with a dozen kills.
George Mason used a quick 2-0 run late in the first stanza to take a 21-19 lead. Hofstra would close the gap to one on a pair of occasions after that, both times on kills from junior Nikki Kinnier, but Zonjic and Danielle Cook had late kills to allow the Patriots to earn the three-point win.
Hofstra would never lead in the second stanza as George Mason broke an 11-all tie with an 8-1 run to take a commanding 19-12 lead en route to a 25-19 win.
The Pride would finally get on the board in the third set as they won 25-22 with Kinnier ending the set with a kill after George Mason closed a five-point deficit to just two points.
George Mason rolled in the final set as they opened up a commanding 24-13 lead before Hofstra scored four straight points to close the gap. That would be as close as the Pride would get, though, as a kill from Cook ended the match.
Kinnier finished with 11 kills and three blocks, while senior Catalina Charry had 29 assists, nine digs and seven kills for the Pride.
Cook was second on the Patriots with 12 kills and had a match-high 10 blocks.
Hofstra is back in action on Saturday, October 13 when it hosts Northeastern at 7 p.m. It will be the Pride's final match at the Hofstra Fitness Center.
