Hempstead, NY - Mike Annarumma scored a first-half goal and
keeper Adam Janowski made it stand up with seven saves as Hofstra blanked #15
Old Dominion, 1-0, Saturday night in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at
the Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
Hofstra improves to 11-5-1, 5-4 in the CAA with the win. The
Monarchs fall to 10-3-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the CAA and saw a two-match
winning streak halted.
Annarumma put the Pride on the board at the 36:54 mark as he
dribbled into the box and ripped a shot that ODU keeper Victor Francoz stopped.
But the rebound came right back to Annarumma and the senior capitalized on the
second chance and put a shot into the top left corner for a 1-0 lead. The goal
was Annarumma's third of the season.
The Monarchs put immense pressure on the Pride, taking 25
shots including 15 in the second half. Janowski and the rest of the Pride
defense were up to the task however. The senior had three saves in the first
4:15 of the contest and made four more in the second half. His last save of the
match was probably his best as ODU's Jason Gaylord came in on the left side and
took a tough-angle shot with 14:46 to go. Knowing he woudn't be able to reach
it with his hands, Janowski got his leg out just enough to deflect the ball
with his toe and preserve the lead.
Old Dominion held a 25-10 advantage in shots and also had
nine corner kicks to Hofstra's two.
Francoz had four saves for Old Dominion.
Hofstra closes out the regular season Wednesday night versus
William and Mary at 7 p.m. as it looks to clinch a home contest in next weekend's
CAA Championship.
