Brookline, Mass. - Northeastern's Andre Ciliotta scored 31 seconds into the second overtime as Hofstra fell to the
Huskies, 1-0, in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup on Wednesday night at
Parsons Field.
Hofstra senior goalkeeper Adam Janowski (Coram, N.Y.) made all but one of his six
saves after halftime and junior Chris Griebsch (Dessau-Rosslau, Germany) logged
a game-high six shots. But Hofstra fell to 9-4-1 and 3-3 in CAA play. Northeastern is the lone remaining team undefeated in CAA play after improving
to 10-2-2 and 5-0-1 against the league.
The matchup featured a matchup of
Janowski and Northeastern's Oliver Blum, who entered the week as the CAA's leader in goals-against
average (0.60) and save percentage (.833). Janowski was up the challenge, stopping both of CAA-leading goal scorer Don Anding's shots on
goal. Blum made six saves for his fourth shutout.
Northeastern is now unbeaten in
the last nine games thanks to Ciliotta in the 101st minute. Anding raced in to right of the box and tried
to move around a defender. He sent a left-footed pass to Ciliotta at the top of
the goal box, allowing him to slide the ball in for his first goal of the
season. Donovan Fayd picked up the secondary assist.
The Pride generated chances against the first-place Huskies. Sophomore Maid
Memic (Kozarac, Bosnia) registered three of Hofstra's six shots on goal.
Hofstra's defense also played well in front of Janowski. Juniors Shaun Foster
(Southport, England) and Tyler Botte (North Babylon, N.Y.) played all 101
minutes. Senior back liner A.J. Laza (Coram, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder
Joseph Holland (London, England) also played the entire game.
Hofstra utilized its bench, using
four subs. Northeastern elected to go with a smaller rotation with only 13
total players seeing game action.
Janowski continued his hot play and came up big in the second half, making four
saves to preserve the scoreless tie and send the game into overtime.
Just 1:07 into the first
overtime, Janowski positioned himself in
front of Anding's shot, catching the ball. Hofstra nearly capitalized
moments later when freshman Felix Schaefer (Aschaffenburg, Germany)'s free kick
was blocked in front and bounced near the vacant right side of the net before
going out for a goal kick.
Hofstra's defense held
Northeastern to just a single shot-on goal in an opening-half in which both
teams were evenly matched. The squads each produced five total shots, though Hofstra
produced a great scoring chance before the break.
Memic great move near the top of
the box, flicking a back-heel pass to himself
before firing a low shot that Blum smothered with an athletic diving
stop to his left in the 29th minute.
Hofstra will conclude its two-game road trip on Saturday against Delaware with
a 1 p.m. start.
