MBB: Hofstra Captures Senior Day Win Over Delaware

2/26/2011 10:11:00 PM

Hempstead, N.Y. - Senior guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, N.Y.) had his jersey number (22) retired pregame, then celebrated Senior Day with 21 points as Hofstra earned a 79-60 win over Delaware on Saturday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd (5,050) at the Mack Sports Complex in the regular season finale.

With the win, the Pride concludes the regular season with a 20-10 record, marking its second 20-win season in the last three years and its fifth in the last seven years. It also finished 14-4 in the CAA, good for a second place tie, which marks the highest that it has ever finished in the CAA standings since joining the league in 2001-02.

The Pride will be the three seed in the CAA Tournament after Old Dominion defeated William & Mary (due to a head-to-head loss to the Monarchs) and will open play on Saturday, March 5 against the winner of James Madison and William & Mary. Delaware ends the regular season at 13-16 and 8-10 in the CAA with the loss.

Hofstra retired Jenkins' jersey number (#22) in a ceremony prior to the game as part of Senior Day. Jenkins became just the 25th student-athlete in Hofstra history to have a jersey retired, including the fifth men's basketball player, and the first to have a number retired while still active. Jenkins, senior forward Greg Washington (Centereach, N.Y.) and senior guard Brad Kelleher (Victoria, Australia) were also honored before the game, as the Pride won its 14th straight Senior Day game, dating back to 1996-97 (the Pride did lose its home finale in 2001-02, but had no seniors on the roster that year).

Hofstra took a 33-26 lead into halftime behind 10 points from Jenkins. The Pride quickly built the lead to 10 points at 36-26 on a three-pointer from Kelleher, and a Jenkins three-pointer at the 15:25 mark made it 41-31. Another Kelleher three upped the lead to 44-31, and freshman guard Shemiye McLendon (Vero Beach, Fla.) extended the lead to 48-33 at the 11:56 mark, and Jenkins stretched it to 20 at 56-36 with 9:24 left, and Hofstra wasn't threatened the rest of the way.

Jenkins checked out of the game in the final minute (58 seconds left) to a standing ovation in his final regular season home game with 2463 career points, the highest active total of any player in the country and 187 more than the old school record. He needs 37 in the postseason to become the 61st player in NCAA history with 2500.

Washington and Kelleher added 12 points on their Senior Days as well for Hofstra, while McLendon and junior guard Mike Moore (New Haven, Conn.) supported the seniors with 11 apiece. Senior guard Jawan Carter led Delaware with 21 points in a losing cause, while freshman guard Devon Saddler added 17.  Hofstra shot 15-15 from the foul line, as five different players contributed to the perfect performance, while outrebounding Delaware 36-28.

The CAA Tournament will begin on Friday, March 4 with the opening round at Richmond Coliseum. James Madison and William & Mary will play in the last opening round game on Friday night, with the winner moving on to face Hofstra on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. The Pride defeated both James Madison and William & Mary in overtime at home in their last meetings (92-90 over James Madison on Jan. 24, and 81-78 over William & Mary on Feb. 15).
