Fairfax, VA – Senior middle blocker Erika Charry and sophomore outside hitter Nikki Kinnier combined for 21 kills and ten blocks to lead the Hofstra Volleyball team to a sweep of George Mason on Saturday evening at the RAC Gym.
The victory, which came with set scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-19, allows Hofstra to end a four-match losing skid and even its record at 12-12 overall and move to 3-4 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. George Mason falls to 7-12 and 2-5 with the loss.
Kinnier led the way with 11 kills in the contest, while adding a career-high tying five blocks. E. Charry was right behind Kinnier with 10 kills and five blocks, while hitting at a stellar .333 clip.
Defensively, junior libero Kylee Maneja was her usually steady self as she had 23 digs, averaging over seven per set. Maneja now has 1,391 career digs and ranks seventh all-time in program history. She is 21 digs shy of sixth place all-time, currently held by Ines Portuondo (1988-90).
Hofstra got better as the match progressed, hitting at a .175 clip in the opening stanza before improving each set, hitting .200 in the second set before closing the match with a .265 attack percentage in the final stanza.
George Mason, which got a match-high 12 kills from Noelle Fanella, hit just .147 for the match as Hofstra clamped down on defense and held the Patriots to a .056 hitting percentage in the third set.
Junior setter Catalina Charry also had a solid match for the Pride as she dished out 31 assists and added six kills (on nine attempts), three digs and two blocks.
Hofstra continues its current road swing as it will travel to Northeastern next Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest.
