WSOC: Rodriguez, Turner Earn Weekly Honors

Hempstead, N.Y. - Redshirt freshman forward Krysti Rodriguez (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week, it was announced today by the league office. Sophomore defender Amy Turner (Stocksbridge, England), meanwhile, was named the Big Apple Soccer Player of the Week.

Rodriguez earned the CAA Rookie of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in the first half of the Pride's 2-0 win over VCU on Sunday. She was part of a spectacular effort from the Hofstra bench, which accounted for both goals, both assists and the only goalkeeper save for the Pride all afternoon. The goal was the first of her collegiate career, after she played in only two games as a true freshman last year before missing the rest of the season with an injury.

Rodriguez becomes the fourth different player (from four different classes) to win an award from the CAA for the Pride in the last four weeks. Turner earned the CAA Player of the Week honor last week, while senior forward Salma Tarik (Bellmore, N.Y.) won it two weeks ago, and junior midfielder Courtney Breen (Hicksville, N.Y.) was honored on Sept. 6.

Turner was honored by Big Apple Soccer (which chooses its Player of the Week from amongst schools in the Metropolitan area) after scoring the game-winning goal on a 35-yard free kick in a 1-0 win over preseason CAA favorite James Madison. Turner also quarterbacked a Hofstra defense which recorded two shutouts, extending its shutout streak to four. Turner has had the game-winning goal in two of those shutouts, including another free kick in a 1-0 win over Columbia last week, which came in double-overtime.

A four-time All-Metropolitan D.C. selection at Stone Bridge High School, Rodriguez was voted the MVP of the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star game as a senior. She holds the school records at Stone Bridge for goals in a career and in a season, and was also a five-year member of the Virginia Olympic Development Program.

The Pride now stands at 8-1 on the season, including an eight-game winning streak since a season opening loss to No. 4 Boston College (which will likely move up to No. 2 this week after defeating top-ranked North Carolina on the road on Thursday). Hofstra will next be in action when it travels to Drexel on Thursday for a 4 p.m. contest, before returning home for a Sunday game against Delaware (1 p.m.).
