Newton, Mass. - Seventh-ranked Boston College scored on three of its first four shots to jump out to a big early lead, as the Hofstra Women's Soccer team opened the 2010 season with a 5-0 defeat to the Eagles on Friday evening at Newton Soccer Field.
With the loss, the Pride opens its season at 0-1, while Boston College, which reached the NCAA quarterfinals last year, improves to 1-0-1 on the young season, after opening up last weekend with a 1-1 tie against No. 2 Stanford.
Boston College wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Hannah Cerrone scored on a short corner just 2:02 into the game. After Natalie Crutchfield earned a corner kick with a long run up the left side, Cerrone took the short pass from Amy Caldwell, and fought off the Hofstra defense into the top of the box, where she buried an 18-yard shot under the crossbar, out of the reach of freshman goalkeeper Emily Morphitis (London, England).
Hofstra nearly responded quickly, as junior midfielder Courtney Breen (Hicksville, NY) burst through the right side of the Eagles defense in the fifth minute, and got an open look from the top of the penalty area. Her hard shot sailed just high and wide of the upper-right corner, though, leaving the score 1-0.
Boston College then put the game away with a pair of counter-attacks to take command. Caldwell finished at the 9:00 mark after another long run from Crutchfield up the left side. Crutchfield centered to Maddie Payne at the top of the penalty area, and Payne laid the ball off to her right to Caldwell, who one-time an opened shot from 15 yards past Morphitis.
Victoria DiMartino then made it 3-0 at the 17:30 mark, when she ran straight up the middle on a counter-attack, pulled up from 23 yards, and found the inside of the right post, giving the Eagles three goals on their first four shots. Boston College added another goal before the end of the first half at the 38:07 mark as Mary Wagner headed the ball into an empty net after a shot from Stephanie Wirth hit the crossbar.
Boston College scored an insurance goal at the 64:21 mark off another corner kick, as Cerrone found the head of Alyssa Pember, who was crashing down the middle with a full head of steam and had no trouble burying the header from the top of the six-yard box.
The Eagles finished with an 11-9 edge in shots. Mastroianni had one save for the Eagles to get the shutout, while Morphitis and senior Krista Thorn (Smithtown, NY), who played the second half, each had a save for the Pride. DiMartino, Caldwell and Cerrone each had a goal and an assist for Boston College, while Breen led the Pride with three shots.
The Pride will next be in action when it hosts the Hofstra Invitational next weekend, facing Rhode Island on Friday at 7 p.m. and Fordham on Sunday at 3 p.m. St. John's will also participate in the event and face Fordham on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Rhode Island on Sunday at 1 p.m.
