VB: Hofstra Falls in Season Opener

Hempstead, NY - Despite 14 kills from sophomore middle blocker Carolyn Jenkins, the Hofstra Volleyball team dropped its season opener to Canisius in four sets on Friday afternoon in the opening match of the Hofstra/Asics Invitational.

In the second match of the afternoon session, Missouri State rallied from two sets down to defeat Texas State in five sets. 

In the Pride's match, Canisius won the first two sets by the scores of 25-19 and 25-17 before Hofstra earned a victory in the third set, 25-22.  Hofstra was unable to knot the match at two sets apiece, though, as they fell 25-19 in the fourth and final set.

In addition to Jenkins, Hofstra placed three others in double figures kills as junior middle blocker Taylor Moore had 12, redshirt freshman outside hitter Nikki Kinnier added 11 and graduate student outside hitter Marina Markovic chipped in with 10. 

The kill total was a career-high for Jenkins, while senior setter Rachel August had 43 assists for the Pride.  Sophomore libero Kylee Maneja led the way defensively for Hofstra with 18 kills.

Samantha Good paced Canisius with 14 kills, while Renee Lettow had 11 kills and 11 digs to record a double-double. 

In the second match of the day, Calli Norman led the way for Missouri State with 19 kills and Cara Hackmann had 12 kills and nine digs.  Matti Schumacher had 15 kills for Texas State.

Day one of the Hofstra/Asics Invitational concludes with a 7 p.m. match featuring Hofstra and Texas State.
