HOFSTRA FALLS TO IUPUI IN CBI FIRST ROUND

3/18/2010 1:00:00 AM

Hempstead, NY- IUPUI's Robert Glenn scored a game-high 32 points, off-setting junior guard Charles Jenkins' 21-point production, as Hofstra fell to the Jaguars, 74-60, in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational on Wednesday night at the Mack Sports Complex.

Jenkins (Queens, NY) added seven rebounds and seven assists, while freshman Halil Kanacevic (Staten Island) scored 12 points and recorded 10 rebounds off the bench for his  sixth double-double. Hofstra finished the season 19-15 after making the postseason for the first time since 2007.

IUPUI (full name: Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis) moved to 25-10 and advanced to play Princeton in the CBI's quarterfinal round. Alex Young contributed 18 points, helping the Jaguars lead wire-to-wire.

Freshman Chaz Williams (Brooklyn, NY) registered 13 points to give the Pride three double-figure scorers. The matchup was the first ever meeting between the schools.

IUPUI held Hofstra to 35.7 percent shooting from the floor and 2-for-19 from beyond the three-point line. Seniors Cornelius Vines (Syracuse, NY) scored two points and Miklos Szabo (Szeghalom, Hungary) hauled in three rebounds in their final collegiate games.

Glenn notched 16 of his points in the opening half and Young added 12 to put IUPUI ahead, 37-24, at halftime. John Ashworth's buzzer-beating three-pointer from near NBA-range completed the scoring before the break.

Hofstra went down as much as 17 in the second half before moving within nine points (50-41) on Jenkins' three-point play near the seven-minute mark.  However, Glenn hit four consecutive foul shots and IUPUI generated turnovers on Hofstra's next two possessions, extending the Jaguars edge to 54-41 with 5:33 left. Ashworth delivered the game-clinching shot with 4:30 left, hitting a right-wing three-pointer as the shot clock expired, putting IUPUI ahead, 60-45, and the Pride was unable to get within 10 the rest of the way.

The Jaguars surged to a game-opening 13-0 run capped by Glenn's reverse dunk and Young's layup five minutes in. IUPUI sustained momentum, hitting eight of its first 14 field goal attempts to build a 21-2 edge. Hofstra responded with an 11-2 run and cut the deficit to as close as six (29-23) to Jenkins' nine-point, five-rebound effort in the opening stanza, before the Jaguars closed the half with an 8-1 run to take a 37-24 lead into the break.

Junior forward Greg Washington (Centereach, NY) did not play due to an ankle injury. Washington leads Hofstra in block shots and entered the game ranked 17th nationally at 2.8 blocks per game.
