2/14/2010 2:00:00 AM

Wilmington, NC - Senior guard Cornelius Vines (Syracuse, NY) tied a school record with seven three-pointers and scored a career high 24 points to lead the Hofstra Men's Basketball team to an 87-70 win over UNC Wilmington on Saturday evening at Trask Coliseum.

With the win, the Pride improves to 14-13 overall and 7-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association, including five wins in its last six games. UNC Wilmington falls to 8-18 overall and 4-11 in the CAA with the loss, while dropping its fourth straight game in the series with the Pride.

Vines hit three three-pointers in a span of 1:03 to break the game open after UNC Wilmington cut a 14-point Hofstra lead down to four points at 56-52. Vines hit all three-pointers from the left side in front of the Pride bench for a personal 9-0 run to stretch the lead back up to 65-52 and the Seahawks were unable to get it under 10 the rest of the way.

The seven three-pointers tied the school mark first set by Frank Walker in 1987-88 against Florida Southern and matched by Jason Hernandez in 1999-2000 against Northeastern. The 24 points eclipsed his previous career high of 23, set last year against Delaware. He had two attempts to break the three-point record, but missed on the first one and was fouled on the second, which was on line but hit off the back rim.

Junior guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) added 22 points for the Pride, while junior forward Greg Washington (Centereach, NY) added 11 points and junior guard Nathaniel Lester (Brooklyn, NY) added 10. Junior guard Ahmad Grant led UNC Wilmington with 23 points.

The Pride took a 12-point halftime lead as it got to the rim at will. Washington got Hofstra jump-started with three dunks in the first three minutes of the game to put Hofstra ahead 9-6. The Pride then went on a 7-0 run, capped off by back-to-back dunks from Lester to take a 21-12 lead with 9:10 left in the half. Another dunk from Washington put the Pride ahead 31-18 with 4:56 in the half, and Jenkins had a pair of late lay-ups as Hofstra took a comfortable 39-27 lead into halftime.

The Pride finished the game with a 45-37 advantage on the boards, and shot 20-24 at the foul line, led by 9-10 from Jenkins (9-9 in the second half). Senior forward Miklos Szabo (Szeghalom, Hungary) nearly had a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds, while helping to hold UNC Wilmington forward John Fields to just seven points on two field goal attempts.

Hofstra will next be in action when it travels to Delaware on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest to try to complete a season sweep against the Blue Hens.
