Hempstead, N.Y. - Junior guard Mike Moore (New Haven, Conn.) scored 15 points to lead the Hofstra Men's Basketball team to a 71-56 win over Holy Cross on Wednesday evening at the Mack Sports Complex.
With the win, Hofstra improves to 7-4 on the season, including 6-1 in its last seven games. Holy Cross slips to 1-9 with the loss.
Senior guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, N.Y.), who came in fourth in the nation in scoring at 24.9 ppg, was held to only 13 points, ending a streak of 17 straight games where he led Hofstra in scoring dating back to last year. Jenkins still was efficient, shooting 4-7 from the floor as he recorded his 100th career game in double figures (out of 106), including 36 in a row. He has also now scored 132 points in five December games (26.4 ppg) on only 67 field goal attempts. Sophomore forward David Imes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 10 points on 4-4 shooting.
Freshman guard Shemiye McLendon (Vero Beach, Fla.) helped give the Pride an early lift with three three-pointers off the bench for a personal 9-0 run, giving Hofstra a 17-10 lead at the 8:50 mark. The Pride added seven more points to stretch the run to 16-0. McLendon assisted senior forward Greg Washington (Centereach, N.Y.) on a fast break, and Jenkins had a three-point play and an assist to finish off the run and make the score 24-10. Jenkins finished off the first half with a lay-up with two seconds left to give the Pride a 34-22 lead.
Holy Cross got as close as five points in the second half at 43-38, but Imes scored the next four points, and a three-pointer from Moore got the lead back to double digits at 50-39 with 11:04 left. Holy Cross scored four straight to cut it to 50-43, but the Pride responded with an 11-0 run, capped off by four straight points from junior guard Dwan McMillan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to put the game away.
Holy Cross was led by senior forward Andrew Keister with 12 points, while Jordan Stevens added 11 and Devin Brown chipped in with 10. McMillan had six points, seven assists and only one turnover for the Pride, while Jenkins added six rebounds and five assists. The Pride held its opponent to 63 points or less for the ninth time in 11 games, as the Crusaders shot only 34.6 percent (18-52).
Hofstra will next be in action when it travels to Iona on Wednesday, Dec. 29 for a 7:30 p.m. contest before resuming Colonial Athletic Association play after the new year with a road game at Drexel on Monday, Jan. 3.
