VB: Pride Fall in Four Sets at George Mason

Fairfax, VA-  Holly Goode tallied 11 kills and Lana Zonjic added 10 to lead the Patriots of George Mason to a 3-1 CAA victory over the Hofstra Pride at the RAC Gymnasium Friday night. George Mason improved to 13-11 on the season and 8-4 in the CAA while the Pride fell to 10-23 overall and 2-11 in conference play.

Nikki Kinnier posted 14 kills, Marina Markovic added 12 kills and Rachel August tallied 33 assists to lead the Pride.

The Pride struggled with their attack Friday night, posting just one set with a positive hitting percentage. The Patriots posted the victory in strong fashion, winning 25-17, 25-16, 20-25, and 25-17.

In the first set, the Pride led 6-5 following a Mason ball-handling error. But the Patriots went on a 13-3 run to take a commanding 18-6 lead and roll to the 25-15 win. The Patriots had their second-best attack percentage of the match with eight kills and just one error for a .280 hitting percentage. The Pride had a -.059 attack percentage in the first set with 10 kills and 12 errors.

The second set was only slightly better for the Pride as Hofstra led 5-4 in the set before the Patriots went on a 12-4 spurt on the way to a 25-16 victory. George Mason recorded its best attack percentage of the match in the second set with 11 kills and three errors for a .320 hitting percentage. The Pride had eight kills and eight attack errors for a .000 percentage.

In a close battle Hofstra pulled away for a 19-14 lead in the third  set before the Patriots rallied and closed to 23-20. But Rachel August tallied a kill and ended the set with a Mason attack error for a 25-20 victory. Both teams posted a .176 hitting percentage with the Pride having 12 kills and the Patriots notching 11.

The fourth and final set was close for the first half as George Mason clung to a 12-11 lead following a Pride service ace. But the Patriots went on another 12-5 run to boost their lead to 24-16 before Zonjic closed out the match with an attack error and a kill for a 25-17 victory. George Mason had nine kills and just four attack errors for a .217 hitting percentage in the fourth set while the Pride had eight kills and eight attack errors for a .000 hitting percentage.

The Pride close out their 2010 season Saturday night at 7 p.m. when they travel to Harrisonburg, Virginia to face the Dukes of James Madison University.
