OLD DOMINION HOLDS OFF HOFSTRA IN DEFENSIVE STRUGGLE

1/9/2010 11:00:00 PM

Norfoilk, VA - Old Dominion jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held off a second half Hofstra rally as the Monarchs captured a 57-46 win over the Pride on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Old Dominion, the preseason Colonial Athletic Association favorite, improves to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Pride slips to 9-8 overall and 2-3 in the CAA.

Junior guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) led Hofstra with 18 points, 14 of which came in the second half, but no other Pride player scored more than six. Keyon Carter led Old Dominion with 14 points, Gerald Lee added 11, and Frank Hassell chipped in with a game-high 14 points for the Monarchs.

Hofstra got out of the gates slowly as Old Dominion scored the first eight points before two foul shots from Jenkins put the Pride on the board at the 13:48 mark. The Monarchs built the lead up to as many as 15 at 26-11 before Hofstra scored the next seven points, five from senior guard Cornelius Vines (Syracuse, NY) to get back within 26-18. However, Keyon Carter closed out the half with a three-pointer to put Old Dominion ahead 29-18.

The Pride came out of the locker room with new life in the second half, as Jenkins hit a three-pointer to cap off a rally that pulled the Pride within 33-32 with 14:46 to play, Darius James hit a floating jumper for Old Dominion, and Jenkins followed with a lay-up to bring Hofstra within a single point again. James, though, answered with a three-pointer, and after two foul shots from senior forward Miklos Szabo (Szeghalom, Hungary) made the score 38-36, Old Dominion used a 10-2 run to stretch the lead back up to 10 points at 48-38 with 7:36 to play on two foul shots from Ben Finney.

Jenkins scored back-to-back baskets to get Hofstra within 48-42, but the Pride could come no closer, as Old Dominion made enough free throws down the stretch to hold on. The Monarchs were just 3-15 from the foul line in the first half and 14-34 for the game, but held Hofstra to just 19-53 from the floor (35.8 percent) to overcome its free throw troubles.

Hofstra will next be in action when it returns home to face defending CAA champion VCU on Tuesday at 7 p.m. That game will be televised nationally by ESPNU. For ticket info, contact the Hofstra Box Office at (516) HOF-TIXX (463-8499).
