GEORGE MASON CAPTURES WIN OVER HOFSTRA

1/20/2010 2:00:00 AM

Hempstead, NY - George Mason guard Cam Long scored a career-high 27 points and Ryan Pearson added 19 points to lift the Patriots to a 90-72 victory over Hofstra in a CAA matchup Tuesday night at the Mack Sports Complex.

Junior guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) led the Pride with 26 points, while freshman guard Chaz Williams tied his career-high with 20 points, which he set in the first meeting with George Mason on Jan. 4. It wasn't enough, though, as Hofstra fell to 9-11 and 2-6 in conference play. Andre Cornelius (18 points) and Mike Morrison (10 points) also scored in double figures to help the first-place Patriots improve to 12-7 and 7-1.

Hofstra senior Miklos Szabo (Szeghalom, Hungary) scored 14 points and added 12 rebounds to complete his third career double-double, marking the second time the 6-9 forward accomplished that feat this season.

The Patriots, which shot 55.6 percent from the floor, took a 38-30 lead into halftime and extended to a 51-37 lead on Pearson's jump shot four minutes into the second half. Hofstra got as close as eight points after Williams buried a left-wing three-pointer midway through the half. But the Patriots continually broke the Pride's full-court press and went up 67-51 nearly two minutes later on Long's three-pointer to provide a cushion.

Long ended hopes of a comeback with the Pride down by 12, when he had a steal and drew the intentional foul with 2:36 remaining. Long hit the free three throws for a 82-68 lead, eclipsing his previous career-best mark of 24 points.

George Mason entered the contest averaging less than five three-pointers per game but surged to a fast start beyond the arc. The Patriots drilled six of its first nine three-point attempts, led by Long's pair as part of his 10-point opening half.

With his 26 points, Jenkins moved into the top 10 in Hofstra history with 1,436 points, passing Leroy Allen (1,435). Freshman forward Halil Kanacevic (Staten Island, NY) had 10 rebounds, all of which came in the first half.

The Pride will next be in action in a Saturday matinee at CAA-rival Drexel. Tipoff is scheduled for noon, and the game will be televised locally on Madison Square Garden Network.
