BROWN'S THREE-POINT PLAY GIVES TRIBE WIN OVER HOFSTRA

1/2/2010 11:00:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - Kendrix Brown converted a three-point play with 17 seconds remaining for his only points of the game as the William & Mary Men's Basketball team edged Hofstra 48-47 on Saturday afternoon at the Mack Sports Complex.

William & Mary, which did not lead the entire game until Brown's three-point play, tied a school record by winning its 10th straight game to improve to 10-2 and 2-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Hofstra, which received a double-double from junior guard Nathaniel Lester (Brooklyn, NY) with 14 points and 10 rebounds, falls to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Hofstra led by two and had the ball with a minute to play, before a turnover led to a fast-break lay-up from senior forward Danny Sumner, who also had not scored the entire night, to tie the score at 45-45. Hofstra called a time-out and Lester missed a three-pointer from the left wing, but freshman forward Halil Kanacevic (Staten Island, NY) grabbed the rebound and converted an up-and-under lay-up to put Hofstra ahead 47-45 with 34 seconds left.

After a timeout by William & Mary, Brown came off a high screen and got into the paint before finishing a three-point play, giving the Tribe its first lead of the night. Hofstra tried to penetrate the William & Mary defense on its last possession, but got bottled up outside of the paint, and Kanacevic's long three-pointer missed. Lester grabbed the rebound on the weak side, but could not get a shot off before time expired as William & Mary held on for the win.

Hofstra jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening minutes, as Lester scored the game's first five points. Senior guard David Schneider ended the William & Mary drought with a three-pointer, and the Tribe chipped away to pull within two points at the break (23-21). Hofstra opened the second half with three-pointers from junior guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) and freshman guard Chaz Williams (Brooklyn, NY) to build the lead up to eight, then took a 41-34 lead when Lester converted two free throws after a technical foul on the William & Mary bench with 10:34 to go.

Schneider hit a three-pointer on the next possession, and two lay-ups from forward Marcus Kitts enabled the Tribe to pull even at 41-41 for the first tie of the game at the 7:27 mark. The teams then traded baskets the rest of the way, until Brown's final three-point play accounted for the final margin of victory.

Hofstra held William & Mary, which entered the game second in the nation in three-pointers made (10.8 per game) to just 3-16 shooting from beyond the arc. The Pride entered the game seventh in the nation in three-point defense (25.6 per game) and was able to hold the Tribe to just three treys on the night. Hofstra also held a 37-27 edge in the rebounding department but still came up a point short in the final score.

Lester had his fourth career double-double and his first of the season in a losing cause. Jenkins was the only other player for the Pride in double figures with 12 points, to go along with six assists. Schneider led William & Mary with 12 points, while Kitts had 11 points on 5-6 shooting.

Hofstra fell to 93-31 all-time at the Mack Sports Complex, which opened exactly 10 years ago on January 2, 2000.

The Pride will next be in action on Monday when it travels to face George Mason for a 7 p.m. contest, before quickly returning home to face Towson on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
