HOFSTRA FALLS TO RICHMOND, 4-1

9/6/2009 7:30:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - Richmond's Katelin Peterson scored a goal and added two assists as the Pride dropped a 4-1 decision to the Spiders in a non-conference Sunday matinee at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.

Hofstra out-shot its opponent for a second straight day but still lost its second game in a row to fall to 2-2. The Pride built a 25-14 edge in shots and a 15-4 penalty corner advantage. But the Spiders improved to 2-2 after goalkeeper Jacki Raithel logged seven saves to pick up the victory.

Freshman Krizia Layne (Arima, Trinidad) provided Hofstra's lone offensive highlight when the forward scored her first collegiate goal 7:36 into the second half to cut Richmond's lead to 3-1. Layne's unassisted tally gave the Pride temporary momentum after she raced into the shooting circle and fired a hard head-on shot that glanced off Raithel's pads and trickled past the goal line.

Richmond answered back almost 14 minutes later when Margaret Ellis capitalized on Peterson's well-placed leading pass. Peterson threaded a centering pass near the 25-yard line, lifting the ball past the Hofstra defense to facilitate Ellis' second goal of the season in putting the Spiders up, 4-1, with 19:47 remaining.

Junior Amy Lee-Levey (Harare, Zimbabwe) again keyed an aggressive Hofstra attack, registering 11 shots and three shots on goal. Layne and Arielle Williams (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) both contributed two shots on goal. The Pride also recorded more shots than Albany Saturday yet still lost to the Great Danes.

The Spiders built a 3-0 lead heading into halftime thanks to crisp passes and Peterson's playmaking ability. Peterson opened the scoring 19:42 into the game when she scored off her own rebound. Hofstra sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Heyde (Somers, NY) made the initial save by diving to her left but couldn't stop the second-chance shot as Richmond seized the momentum early.

Dani Pycroft made it a two-goal game 29:44 into the opening half, directing Sarah Blythe-Wood's hard pass into the net for a one-time goal. Pycroft initiated a penalty corner attempt and was left unguarded near the left post in the subsequent play.

Blythe-Wood garnered a multi-point game by adding her fifth goal of the season with just 2:27 remaining in the first half. The midfielder crashed the shooting circle and was able to lift a shot above a diving Heyde to make it 3-0, giving Blythe-Wood 12 points through four games.

Heyde finished with two saves while junior Krisha Giammarco (Stewartsville, NJ) made one save in 35 minutes after entering the contest to start the second half.

Hofstra will look to regroup with its first road game of the season Saturday when it takes on Fairfield at 2 p.m. The Pride will return home the following day with a Sunday afternoon tilt against Rider. Game time at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
