HOFSTRA FALLS ON ROAD TO YALE

9/6/2009 8:45:00 PM

New Haven, CT (Sept. 6) - Leslie Perez had a goal and an assist and Ayana Sumiyasu had nine saves in net as the Yale Women's Soccer team defeated Hofstra 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Reese Stadium.

With the loss, the Pride sees its record level at 2-2 on the young season. Yale, meanwhile, improves to 2-0 with its second win of its opening weekend.

Hofstra withstood some early pressure from Yale before the Bulldogs scored the game's first goal at the 19:54 mark as Mullo found the back of the net with a free kick from just outside the box. It marked the fourth straight game that Hofstra has given up the first goal in the opening half.

The Pride didn't attempt its first shot until the 29th minute, when its reserves provided a bit of a lift. Senior forward Jill Lipari (Flanders, NJ) missed wide right, and a minute later, senior forward Erika Fuertes (Upper Brookville, NY) took another shot that was saved by Sumiyasu.

Yale stretched its lead to 2-0 just 9:50 into the second half, as Perez scored off a crossing pass from Kristen Forster. Moments earlier, Hofstra sophomore forward Laura Greene (Holbrook, NY) had a bid to tie the game, but her shot was saved by Sumiyasu.

Becky Brown stretched the lead to 3-0 at the 71:16 mark when she scored off a feed from Perez to cement the win for Yale. Sophomore midfielder Courtney Breen (Hicksville, NY) hit the crossbar late in the game, and Lipari had her shot attempt on the rebound saved by Sumiyasu.

Each team finished with 17 shots, while Hofstra had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Junior forward Salma Tarik (Bellmore, NY) led Hofstra with five saves. Junior goalkeeper Krysten Farriella (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) tallied seven saves in a losing cause.

Hofstra will next be in action when it hosts its 2009 home opener on Friday evening when it takes on Indiana for a 7 p.m. contest. It will then entertain Harvard on Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest.
