Easton, PA - Sophomore Genna Kovar scored two goals, keying Hofstra's season-best offensive performance in a 5-1 win over Pacific in a neutral site; non-conference matchup Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Krizia Layne and junior Amy-Lee Levey also added goals as Hofstra jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead at Lafayette College. Junior Becky Kazaks came off the bench to tally her first goal of the season as the Pride won its second in a row to improve to 5-3. Lisa Muhl scored Pacific's only goal, though the Tigers still dropped to 4-2.
Layne ignited the Pride offense, scoring her season's second goal just 40 seconds into the game to set the tone. The early rush was indicative of Hofstra's offense prowess, culminating with a 29-6 advantage in shots for the Pride.
Kovar entered the season without a multi-goal game but scored twice in a game for the second time in eight days. Following a two-goal effort against Fairfield Sept. 12, Kovar followed Layne's goal with a score at 21:16. Just 43 seconds later, Levey extended Hofstra's lead to 3-0 by converting off a penalty stroke for a second straight game.
Pacific goalkeeper Ashlee Schlesier didn't benefit from much defensive support but tried to keep the Tigers in the contest. Schlesier posted 17 saves and was under constant pressure with Hofstra building a 14-2 edge in penalty corners.
Hofstra never scored more than three goals in a game this season. But Kovar's unassisted goal 1:13 into the second half set a new high and put Hofstra ahead, 4-0. Muhl scored at 51:40 on a penalty stroke to end the Pride's shutout bid before Kazaks added the game's final goal 1:36 later.
Sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Golden turned aside two of the three shots on goal she faced in 56:53. The Pride will open Colonial Athletic Association play when it hosts Drexel Saturday at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
