HOFSTRA'S COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT IN LOSS TO RIDER

9/13/2009 7:15:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - Rider's Virginia Egusquiza scored the game's only goal in the first half, leading the Broncs to a 1-0 win over the Pride Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.

Senior Reyna Farnum (Bridgetown, Barbados) racked up four of Hofstra's six total shots and sophomore Meredith Golden (Louisville, KY) stopped five of six shots on goal in her 2009 debut. But Hofstra still dropped to 3-3 while Rider improved to 5-0 in the non-conference game.

Goalkeeper Lyndsie Johnson made two saves-both in the second half-to pick up the shutout. Rider held an 11-6 edge in shots and a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners.

The Broncs built a lead it would not relinquish 21:58 into the contest when Rider drew a penalty corner. Ellie LaBar collected the ball near the shooting circle's right side before sending a lateral pass to her left.

LaBar's feed went right to Egusquiza, who blasted a hard head-on shot that beat Golden for her fourth goal of the season. Johnson made that solitary lead stand up by logging her season's second shutout.

Hofstra's defense held a potent Rider offense mostly in check. Megan Pisani entered the contest with seven goals and Jackie Adams had scored four goals through the first four games. The Pride kept both players off the scoreboard and nearly parlayed that effort into a comeback. Hofstra fired five second-half shots after mustering just one shot through the opening 35 minutes.

Golden looked sharp facing 11 Rider shots in her first start this season. The second-year netminder kept Hofstra's deficit at one goal when she made a late diving save to stymie Adams' breakaway chance with 9:08 left.

Farnum tallied all of her four shots in a 1:46 span, including two scoring chances off penalty corners. Johnson turned aside both of those shots on goal. Hofstra's senior captain Kristin Thompson (Santa Cruz, Trinidad) compiled the other two Pride shots.

Hofstra returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Quinnipiac. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Fans can also follow the action by going to GoHofstra.com.
