CLYMER NAMED CAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

2/5/2009 6:00:00 PM

Hofstra freshman Ben Clymer has been named the CAA Wrestling Rookie of the Week for all competition from January 27 through February 2. The CAA also announced that Chris Brown of Old Dominion University is the Colonial Athletic Association Wrestler of the Week.

Clymer, a freshman 184-pounder from Germansville, PA (Northwestern Lehigh), won both of his bouts last week, defeating Colin Hitschler from Penn, 4-3, and a 3-1 CAA victory over Justin Wieller from Drexel, to improve to 18-7 on the season.   Clymer has won nine of his last 11 bouts and is ranked third in the CAA, and 32nd in the nation according to the Coaches Panel.

Brown, a junior 165-pounder from Chesapeake, VA (Great Bridge), upset Trevor Stewart of Central Michigan, 5-2, to give the Monarchs a 10-9 lead in the match. Brown is ranked 11th by Amateur Wrestling News and 14th by InterMat, while Stewart was ranked ninth by AWN and 12th by InterMat.  It marked the fifth time this season that Brown has defeated a top-20 wrestler.  His seven consecutive wins brings his record to 21-6 overall, 16-3 in duals.

The Pride return to action on Sunday, February 8 at 5 p.m. when they host the third-ranked Big Red of Cornell at the David S. Mack Sports Complex. Nick Gallo, who captured the Pride's only national championship in 1977 at 126 pounds, will be honored with a banner-raising ceremony during halftime ceremonies.
