Hempstead, NY- Senior Cornelius Vines scored a game-high 17 points to lead Hofstra to a wire-to-wire 70-46 victory over Elon in the third round of the NIT Season Tip-Off's consolation bracket Monday at the Mack Sports Complex.
Vines (Syracuse, NY) was one of three Hofstra players to score in double figures as the Pride won its second straight in improving to 3-2. Elon was held to just 34 percent field goal shooting in dropping to 2-3.
Junior Greg Washington (Centereach, NY) hauled in seven rebounds and scored all 12 of his points in the first half while junior Nathaniel Lester (Brooklyn, NY) added 12 points. Senior Miklos Szabo (Szeghlaom, Hungary) and junior Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) each scored nine points.
The Pride generated three turnovers in the opening three minutes, leading to seven fast-break points as Hofstra surged to a 13-1 lead. That high-pressure defense sustained itself through the opening half with Elon committing 12 turnovers.
Hofstra capitalized on the extra possessions, building a 21-point lead. Washington connected 5-7 shots for 12 points and freshman Yves Jules (Brooklyn, NY) drilled a left-wing jump shot to help put Hofstra up, 42-21, heading into the break.
Lester's put-back layup capped a strong second-half Hofstra start, extending his team's edge to 57-26 almost nine minutes into the second half. Elon then went on a 12-0 run before Vines answered with back-to-back three pointers to make it 63-38 with 6:15 remaining.
Jenkins, who entered as Hofstra's leading scorer with an 18.5 points-per-game average, had his second straight game with nine points, playing just 21 minutes due to the lopsided score. An injury forced him out of the Pride's previous game against Farmingdale State on Friday after 13 minutes, when he had only nine points as well. After scoring in double figures in 61 of his first 64 career games, Jenkins has been held to single digits in each of the last two games, while playing just a combined 34 minutes.
The Pride held an opponent to less than 40 percent shooting from the field for the third time this season, with all three of those games resulting in Hofstra victories.
Hofstra will conclude the NIT Season Tip-Off with a fourth-round consolation bracket game against Charlotte Tuesday at home. Tip off for that contest will be no earlier than 7 p.m. with Elon and Yale starting the doubleheader at 4:30.
