NORTHEASTERN STRIKES EARLY, CAPTURES 2-0 WIN OVER HOFSTRA

10/8/2009 1:00:00 AM

Hempstead, NY - Nick Lueders had a goal and an assist in the first half to lead the Northeastern Men's Soccer team to a 2-0 win over Hofstra on Wednesday evening at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

The loss was the first for the Pride in league play, as it falls to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Northeastern remains perfect at 2-0 in the CAA, and improves to 3-5 overall.

Northeastern struck quickly in the first half at the 6:34 mark, as Lueders played a long ball out of his defensive end. Huskies forward Don Anding and Hofstra defender Richard Martinez (Highland, NY) were in a foot race for the ball, and sophomore goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone (Haddam, CT) came out of the box to around the 30-yard mark to attempt to clear it. Anding got there first and toe-poked the ball past Cumpstone, then gathered it in at the top of the 18-yard box, and sent a line drive past Hofstra defender Thomas Bekas (Brentwood, NY) who hustled back to the goal line, but was unable to get his body in front of the ball.

The Huskies then tacked on an insurance goal with just 3:50 left in the half, as Santiago Bedoya broke down the left sideline and sent a cross into the middle. Lueders got a head on the ball in the middle of a crowd just outside the six-yard box, and his header deflected off a Hofstra defender, catching Cumpstone leaning the wrong way as it re-directed into the right side of the net.

Scott Partridge was tested midway through the first half on a blast from sophomore forward Brett Carrington (St. George, Barbados) from just outside the penalty box, but Partridge was able to dive to his right to stop it and smother the rebound.

Northeastern finished with a 13-5 edge in shots, as Partridge needed to make two saves to get the shutout. Cumpstone had three saves for the Pride, including a breakaway on Lueders early in the second half to keep the score 2-0.

Hofstra will next be in action when it travels to Delaware on Saturday for a rare 10 a.m. contest, its first of three straight road games.
