Newark, DE- Delaware's Alexis Esbitt scored two goals on her first two shots as Hofstra fell to the 17th-ranked Blue Hens, 4-1, in a Colonial Athletic Association meeting Friday night at Fred P. Rullo Jr. Stadium.
Hofstra saw its six-game winning streak end in dropping to 11-7 and 4-3 in conference play.
The Pride entered with a chance to post two wins over nationally ranked opponents in the same season for the first time in school history. Instead, Delaware's Noelle Diana made eight saves as the Blue Hens improved to 12-4 and 6-1.
Delaware surged to a 2-0 halftime lead before Esbitt's second goal extended the advantage to three goals. Hofstra senior captain Kristin Thompson kept the contest competitive with her fifth goal of the season 11:46 into the second half to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Esbitt opened the scoring 6:03 in, logging an unassisted goal to give Delaware the early lead. Amanda McCardell capitalized on Casey Howard's pass for her eighth goal exactly 30 minutes into the game, allowing the Blue Hens to head into the break up by a pair of goals.
Esbitt entered the game with one goal on the season but capped a two-goal evening when she added what turned out to be a clutch insurance marker 8:47 into the second half. Almost three minutes later Thompson scored to end Diana's shutout bid.
Howard registered a three-point night by scoring an unassisted goal with 6:23 left for her team-leading 21st goal that provided the final margin.
Hofstra sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Heyde, coming off an 11-save effort versus Northeastern, finished with seven saves in the game.
Game time for Saturday is set for 7 p.m. at Stevenson University Field.
