Freshman forward Laura Greene (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East - pictured) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Rookie of the Week, it was announced today by the conference office.
Greene earned the honor after scoring the game-winning goal in Hofstra's 1-0 win over Delaware on Friday and helping set up the game-winning goal in the Pride's 1-0 double-overtime win over Drexel on Sunday. The two wins enabled Hofstra to take over sole possession of first place in the CAA after the opening weekend of league play. She shared the award with Northeastern's Veronica Napoli, who had three goals in a 3-2 win over Drexel on Friday.
Greene scored her first collegiate goal in the Delaware contest, breaking a scoreless tie in the 72nd minute. Freshman midfielder Courtney Breen (Hicksville, NY) set the play up when she made a long run up the middle of the field and slotted a pass to her right to a cutting Greene. Greene took one dribble before calmly depositing a shot inside the left post to give the Pride the victory.
In the Drexel game on Sunday, Greene almost picked up her second goal of the weekend in the first half, but she hit the post from inside the box. In the second overtime, she helped set up the deciding goal when her shot was saved by Dragon goalkeeper Kaitlin Bond over the end line for a corner kick. Hofstra then scored on the ensuing corner kick, as sophomore forward Salma Tarik (Bellmore, NY) tallied her first goal with the Pride.
Greene was a late addition to the Hofstra recruiting class this summer, as she was originally planning on running on the Virginia Tech track and field team. She changed her mind, though, and decided to stay home on Long Island to play soccer for the Pride. She was the Suffolk County Player of the Year for Sachem East High School last fall, after helping her team to its second straight appearance in the New York state semifinals. She scored 24 goals for Sachem East as both a junior and senior.
Hofstra returns to action this weekend for a pair of home games at Hofstra Soccer Stadium, taking on george Mason on Friday at 7 p.m. and Towson on Sunday at 1 p.m.
