Hofstra University senior outside hitter Lauren Engle was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Week, it was announced today by the conference office. It marks the second straight week that Hofstra has earned at least a part of the player of the week award as senior middle blocker Ashley Legerretta shared the honor last week.
Engle has been the key during Hofstra's current five-match win streak, especially during the Pride's three wins last week.
She picked up her sixth double-double of the season on Tuesday against Manhattan as she led Hofstra with 13 kills and 12 digs. She followed that match up with a dominating 19-kill effort against James Madison on Friday. Engle averaged a stellar 4.75 kills per set against the Dukes, while leading the team in kills and tying for match-high honors. She would finish the week with a strong nine-kill, nine-dig effort in the three set sweep of George Mason. She averaged three kills and three digs per set against the Patriots as she helped Hofstra extend its overall win streak to five matches in a row and its home win streak to six straight.
Engle led Hofstra with 41 kills last week and was third with 27 digs, while hitting a stellar .307. One of the top career kill leaders at Hofstra, Engle upped her total to 1,169 career kills and passed Elizabeth Curley (2003-06) for sixth place all-time with her 41 kills this week. Curley, the lone All-American in program history, compiled 1,160 kills during her career. For the season, Engle is second with 278 kills and fifth with 199 digs.
Hofstra (15-11, 7-3 CAA) returns to action on Friday when they travel to Towson for a 7 p.m. match.
