WEBER, DEROSA NAMED THIRD-TEAM ALL-AMERICANS

12/14/2007 12:00:00 PM

Senior defender Sue Weber (Islip, NY - pictured at left) and senior forward Brooke DeRosa (Ronkonkoma, NY - pictured at right) were named to the 2007 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division I Women's Soccer All-America Third Team in a vote of the nation's coaches, it was announced this evening.

Weber became the first All-American in Hofstra Women's Soccer history back in 2005, when she earned third-team honors after leading the Pride to its first-ever conference championship and NCAA Tournament berth. This year, she had company as DeRosa joined the Pride as a transfer after a two-year absence from college soccer and helped lead the Pride to another CAA title, a school record 18 wins, and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Weber is a three-time CAA Defensive Player of the Year and a two-time CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player selection. She was also named a first-team CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American earlier this month. Weber tallied six assists on the season, second on the team, and spearheaded a defensive unit that set school records with 12 shutouts and seven consecutive shutouts this year. She played every minute of every game in her entire collegiate career, including one season at Georgia in 2004 before she transferred to Hofstra in 2005.

DeRosa played at Syracuse from 2002-04, before leaving school for personal reasons and transferring to join the Pride this fall. She tallied 14 goals on the season, tying for the second-highest single-season total in school history. She scored three of her goals in the postseason, including two in the CAA semifinals against James Madison and one against top-seeded Penn State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. She also had five assists to finish with 33 points, just two shy of the school record.

Hofstra finished the 2007 season with a school record 18 wins (18-4), while winning its second CAA championship and first-ever NCAA Tournament game. The Pride advanced to the second round with a 1-0 win over Ohio State before just missing a Sweet 16 appearance as it fell 2-1 in overtime to regional top seed Penn State in the second round. DeRosa's first half goal gave Hofstra a 1-0 lead against Penn State, which lasted until the Nittany Lions tied the score with just 14 seconds remaining. That goal ended a school record shutout streak of 725 minutes for the Weber-led defense, which lasted over a month.
