Senior middle blocker Elizabeth Curley (Centerville, MA) and sophomore outside hitter Lauren Engle (San Diego, CA - pictured) each posted a team-high 11 kills as the Hofstra Volleyball team swept its second-straight opponent, defeating New Jersey Institute of Technology (30-25, 30-21, 30-24) Saturday afternoon at Levien Gymnasium on the campus of Columbia University.
Hofstra evened its record at 4-4 with its third straight win and fourth in its last five matches. The Highlanders fell to 2-6 with the loss. In addition, today's win marked the 700th the history of the Hofstra Volleyball program (since 1976).
For Curley, it was her sixth straight match with at least 10 kills and in her last five matches, the 6-2 senior has totaled 72 kills on 120 attempts with just six errors for a spectacular .550 hitting percentage. During the five-match stretch, Curley is averaging 4.24 kills per game and 1.12 blocks per game as well.
Engle picked up her first double-double of the season this afternoon, as she added 10 digs.
Hofstra out-hit NJIT in all three games, including holding the Highlanders to a .028 attack percentage in games two and three. The Pride had their best offensive performance in the second stanza as they hit at a .314 clip, slamming down 16 kills on 35 attempts with just five errors.
Pride senior libero Catherine Durakis (Cresskill, NJ) led the way in a pair of categories for Hofstra as she had 11 digs and six service aces in the match. Hofstra shared the setting duties for the second consecutive match with junior Shellane Ogoshi (Honolulu, HI) notching 25 assists and sophomore Sarah Lopez (Prescott Valley, AZ) adding 11.
NJIT had just one player in double figures in kills as Kasham Hornstein led the way with 14. Sabrina Baby had a match-high 12 digs and Danielle Thompson dished out 25 assists for the Highlanders.
Hofstra returns to action tomorrow when it opens Colonial Athletic Association play against Northeastern at 12 p.m.
