OGOSHI EARNS SECOND STRAIGHT CAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD

9/25/2006 4:30:00 PM

Hofstra University junior setter Shellane Ogoshi (Honolulu, HI/Roosevelt) earned her second straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Week honor today as the conference named her as the co-recipient of the award.  Ogoshi shared the award with Allyson Halls of James Madison.

Ogoshi led the way for Hofstra as the Pride extended its win streak to four matches with a pair of home wins this past week.  On Thursday, Hofstra handed Delaware its first loss of the season after 12 straight victories and then on Sunday Hofstra defeated Towson, which has advanced to the CAA Championship Match in two straight years, in four games.  In addition, Hofstra has now won nine of its last 11 matches since a 0-3 start to the 2006 campaign.  The two conference wins this past week upped Hofstra's CAA mark to 5-0, tying this year's squad with the 2002 and 2005 teams for the program's best start in conference play since Hofstra joined the CAA prior to the 2001 season.

With her 43 assists against Delaware, Ogoshi moved into third place all-time at Hofstra with 2,974 career helpers.  She passed Ines Portuondo, who had 2,871 assists from 1988-90.  Ogoshi added 49 assists against the Tigers on Sunday and her career total now stands at 2,923.  Ogoshi continues to shine for Hofstra, which is still without the services of injured junior right side Talita Silva.  Ogoshi paced the Pride offense to a .283 attack percentage for the week, while having a hand in nearly every facet of the Pride's two wins.  Ogoshi led Hofstra in assists and service aces last week, while also adding over a kill per game, over two digs per game and chipping in with a pair of blocks.  With her stellar week leading Hofstra, Ogoshi now ranks first in the CAA (CAA matches only) in assists per game and second in service aces per game.

In Hofstra's two matches this week, Ogoshi compiled 92 assists (13.14 per game), 15 digs (2.14), eight kills (1.14), five service aces (0.71) and two blocks (0.29).

For the season, Ogoshi has amassed 539 assists (10.78 per game), 138 digs (2.76), 42 kills (0.84), 17 service aces (0.34) and eight blocks (0.16).  She leads the Pride in assists, while ranking second in digs and fourth in service aces.

Hofstra returns to action on Friday when they host James Madison at 7 p.m.  The Pride will also be in action at home on Sunday when they take George Mason at 1 p.m.
