Freshman midfielder Edel Malone (Ennis, Ireland - pictured) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week, it was announced today by the league office.
Malone tallied two assists in the Pride's only game last week, a 3-0 win over Northeastern in its Colonial Athletic Association opener. Malone assisted on the game-winning goal in the first half on a chip pass over the top of the Husky defense, which found senior midfielder Chrissy Arnone (Merrick, NY). She then added a second assist in the 61st minute on another pass to Arnone, who's goal put the Pride ahead 3-0. Arnone was named the CAA Player of the Week on Sept 19, giving the Pride an award winner in each of the last two weeks.
Over her last three games, Malone has tallied three goals and three assists to move into second place on the Pride with 10 points on the season (three goals, four assists). She also currently leads the Colonial Athletic Association in assists per game (0.5). Her recent improved performance has led to an offensive explosion for the Pride, which has tallied 19 goals in the last four games, all victories.
Malone is one of four Irish players on the 2005 Hofstra Women's Soccer team. She is also currently an alternate for the Ireland National team, which played to a 0-0 draw in a World Cup qualifying match on Sunday against Scotland. Sophomore Marie Curtin (Kilmallock, Ireland) and freshman forward Kacey O'Driscoll (Caherciveen, Ireland) missed the Northeastern game to travel to Scotland with the national team.
Hofstra will next be in action when it continues Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend with a home game against Drexel on Friday at 7 p.m. and a road game at Delaware on Sunday at 2 p.m.
