Norfolk, VA (March 1) - Senior Rasheed Wright scored a game-high 19 points and Old Dominion held Hofstra to just 25 percent shooting for the game as the Monarchs closed out the regular season with a 77-46 win over Hofstra on saturday evening at the Conastant Convocation Center.
The loss ends the Pride's regular season with a 7-20 overall record and a 6-12 mark in the CAA. Hofstra will be the ninth seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament and will take on either William & Mary or James Madison in the opening round on Friday at 5 p.m., with the winner advancing to meet top-seeded North Carolina-Wilmington on Saturday at 12 noon. William & Mary closes out its regular season at North Carolina-Wilmington on Monday, and if the Tribe wins that game, it will take the seventh seed and Hofstra would open play against James Madison. If North Carolina-Wilmington wins, then Hofstra and William & Mary would meet in the opening round.
Old Dominion took control of the game with its defense early on, holding Hofstra without a field goal until the 11:20 mark of the first half, when senior guard Rick Apodaca hit a three-pointer. The Monarchs led 14-2 at that point, as Hofstra missed its first nine shots and turned the ball over eight times before making a field goal. The Pride managed to overcome its slow start, though, as Apodaca made three three-pointers in a span of 3:00 to pull his team within 17-11.
However, after an exchange of baskets left Old Dominion ahead 20-13, the Monarchs then rattled off a 13-0 run to take control of the game for good. Junior guard John Waller started the spurt with a trip of three-pointers on three consecutive possession to push the lead up to 29-13 and force the Pride to call a time-out. After Apodaca's three-point flurry, though, it could manage only two inside baskets from senior center Lars Grubler the rest of the half as it trailed 44-19 at the break, its largest first half deficit of the season.
Old Dominion kept up the defensive pressure and never let Hofstra get on any sort of a run in the second half as it cruised home for the win. The Pride shot just 5-24 in the first half (20.8 percent) and 7-24 in the second half (29.2 percent) on its way to its lowest scoring output since losing 74-46 at Vanderbilt only in the 1999-2000 season.
Apodaca was the only Hofstra player in double figures, with 17 points. He also made four three-pointers, giving him 185 in his career, seven shy of the school record held by Norman Richardson (1997-2001). Waller finished the game with 12 points, while Ricardo Marsh added 10 for Old Dominion, which shot 50 percent from the floor for the game (28-56).
