POLLO NAMED CAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK IN VOLLEYBALL

11/3/2003 12:10:00 PM

Hofstra University junior outside hitter Alessandra Pollo (Savona, Italy, Venice (FL)) was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Week in volleyball today, it was announced by the conference office.  This marks the second time this season that Pollo has been named the Player of the Week (September 29).

This is the fourth weekly award that a member of the Pride has received this season as freshman setter Silvia Maier (Buenos Aires, Argentina) earned the Rookie of the Week award on September 2 and freshman middle blocker Elizabeth Curley (Centerville, MA/Barnstable) was named Rookie of the Week on October 6.

Pollo recorded double-digit kills in each match as the Pride posted two conference victories and continued their late-season resurgence.  Pollo registered a double-double in the Pride's three-game victory over William & Mary with 19 kills and 15 digs.  In Hofstra's three-game victory over UNC Wilmington, Pollo added 12 kills, eight digs and two service aces.  Pollo has led the Pride in four of the last five matches, and Hofstra has now won 10 of its last 13 matches after starting the season 1-10.  On the week, Pollo averaged 5.17 kills in just six games, hit .286 and averaged 3.83 digs per game.

Pollo is currently second on the Pride in kills (260), while ranking third in digs (234), blocks (51) and service aces (19).

Hofstra, which is now 11-13 overall and 7-3 in the CAA, returns to action on Friday, November 7 when they travel to Virginia Commonwealth for a 5 p.m. match.
