Gary Book was promoted to associate head coach in February 2018 after spending 13 seasons as an assistant coach and nine as the top assistant. Book joined the Pride as a volunteer assistant in 2005 after 13 seasons as an assistant coach at St. John's University, where he helped the Red Storm achieve unprecedented success.

In Book's tenure at Hofstra, the Pride has posted a record of .500 or better in 10 seasons, including six consecutive, with Hofstra holding a 120-94-37 record since he joined the staff in 2005. He has also helped lead the Pride to three NCAA Tournament berths.

Book has helped Hofstra to consecutive Colonial Athletic Association regular-season titles in 2015 and 2016, with the Pride going 7-1 in conference play in 2016, its best CAA winning percentage since joining the league. With a 9-8-1 record, Hofstra recorded a winning record for the ninth time since Book joined the staff.

In 2015, Book helped lead the Pride back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006, with the team earning an automatic bid and hosting rights for the first round after defeating Delaware to win the Colonial Athletic Association title. Hofstra finished the season 14-8, tying for the most wins in the program’s Division I history.

Book was named the Glenn “Mooch” Myernick National Assistant Coach of the Year for the South Atlantic region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 2012, after helping the team to an 11-6-4 record, the Pride’s first 10-win season since 2006.

In his first season in 2005, Book helped the Pride to a No. 13 national ranking, a second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

In 2006, he helped the squad to another CAA title and NCAA berth, including a trip to the second round. In 2010, the Pride advanced to the CAA championship game. During his Hofstra tenure, the Pride has won 105 games.

At St. John's, Book was an assistant coach on the 1996 squad that captured the first national championship in Red Storm history in any sport. His teams also qualified for the NCAA Tournament in all 13 seasons of his tenure, reaching the Sweet 16 nine times and the Final Four three times. In addition, St. John's captured five Big East regular season championships and six Big East Tournament titles.

Book also serves as a National Staff coach for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
