Former Major League Soccer goalkeeper Brian Edwards is entering his first season as an assistant coach for the Hofstra Men’s Soccer team in 2015.

Edwards comes to Hofstra after serving as the goalkeepers coach at UNC Charlotte in 2013. He worked with both the 49ers’ men’s and women’s programs, and was part of a men’s staff that led UNC Charlotte to the 2013 Conference USA championship and a second-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Edwards will work with the Pride goalkeepers following an impressive playing career. A 2008 MLS SuperDraft second-round pick (28th overall) by Toronto FC, he played in nine games from 2008-09 and posted three shutouts with a 3-4-2 record.

He played for the USL Second Division Charlotte Eagles in 2010 before signing with the San Jose Earthquakes of the MLS in September of that year. He spent the rest of the 2010 MLS season as San Jose’s backup goalkeeper behind former 49ers All-American goalkeeper Jon Busch.

In 2011, he played for the Degerfors IF in the Swedish Second Division. He recorded the fourth highest save percentage in the league that season.

Edwards entered the pro ranks following an accomplished college career in which he led Wake Forest to the 2007 national championship. From 2003-07, Edwards helped make the Demon Deacons a powerhouse in Division I and still is the school’s all-time leader in goals-against-average at 0.78 and shutouts (44).

Edwards made four saves in Wake Forest’s 2-1 win over Ohio State to secure the 2007 title and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player. In his senior season, he was named to the  NSCAA All-South First Team and was selected to both the All-ACC First Team and ACC All-Tournament Team.

Edwards graduated from Wake Forest with a Bachelor's Degree in Communications in 2007.
