Serge Clement

Serge Clement is in his third season as an assistant coach on the Hofstra men’s basketball staff.

Clement joined Hofstra University after spending three seasons as the top assistant at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Over the past two years, Clement has contributed to back-to-back seasons with 20 or more wins. In 2021-22, Hofstra won 21 games, and this past season the Pride won 25 games, captured the regular season Colonial Athletic Association Championship, and advanced to the second round of the National Invitation Tournament by defeating Rutgers in the first round. In addition, Hofstra earned victories over nationally ranked opponents in each of the past two seasons. In the 2021-22 season, the Pride defeated #24-ranked Arkansas, and during the 2022-23 campaign, they defeated #18-ranked Charleston.

Clement is a strong addition to the Hofstra program as he has received national accolades for his coaching aptitude and expertise. Most recently, he was recognized as one of “75 Rising Stars: Impactful Men's Mid Major Assistants” in 2023 by Silver Waves Media. Over the past three years, he has been a three-time Silver Waves Media honoree and a three-time Top Connect attendee. In 2020, he was also named as a Top Five Assistant Coach in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference by Jeff Goodman of WatchStadium.com. In 2019, Clement was selected to join fellow industry peers in Tampa, Florida, for the NCAA Basketball Coaches Academy.

At Marist, Clement was the program’s lead recruiter and assisted in all aspects of managing the program. In 2020-21, the Red Foxes had their first winning season in 13 years and best conference finish in 14 seasons. During that same season, Marist finished above .500 for the first time in 19 years, and their 6-1 start was the best in 22 years.

During Clement’s three-year tenure at Marist, his primary focus was guard development. In his inaugural season, his work with Brian Parker resulted in all-conference honors. Similarly, in his final season at Marist, Clement successfully recruited guard Ricardo Wright, who was named MAAC Rookie of the Week four times and recognized as an all-conference honoree.

From 2013 to 2018, Clement worked as an assistant coach at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, New Jersey. Throughout his tenure, the Peacocks achieved significant success, including capturing the 2017 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament title and making a pair of MAAC semifinal appearances. At the end of the 2016-17 season, Saint Peter's secured a second-place finish in the MAAC with 23 wins, tying the second-highest number of wins in program history at the time.

While at Saint Peter’s, Clement recruited Sam Idowu, who finished his collegiate career fourth all-time in blocked shots for the Peacocks. Clement also recruited and developed all-conference guard Davauhnte Turner as well as assisted in the development of four additional all-conference honorees — Nick Griffin, Antwon Portley, Desi Washington, and Trevis Wyche.

No stranger to Long Island, Clement was an assistant coach at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, from 2011-13. At the time, he was part of a staff that helped the Panthers to a 2011 NCAA Division II East Region semifinal appearance. His first foray into coaching came at SUNY Cortland from 2009 to 2011, including his role as camp director for the SUNY Cortland athletic department in 2010.

Throughout his career, Clement has worked at a variety of camps throughout the country, including Hoop Group Elite, St. John’s University, Five-Star Basketball, Hoop Mountain, Reebok All-American, Duke University, Siena College, and the Nike Pre-Draft camp.

In addition to his coaching duties, he has been a member of the adjunct faculty and a capstone advisor for the Georgetown University Sports Industry Management graduate program since 2021.

A 2009 graduate of SUNY Potsdam with a bachelor’s degree in business economics, Clement played two seasons for the Bears. In 2011, he earned his master’s degree in sports management from SUNY Cortland.
