Oscar Melendez joins the Hofstra University Department of Sports Medicine in September 2021 as the assistant athletic trainer, and will work with the Hofstra Field Hockey and Hofstra Women’s Basketball programs.

Melendez comes to Hofstra from St. Joseph’s College-Brooklyn, where he was the head athletic trainer since 2010. Melendez worked directly with all 14 of SJC’s NCAA Division III programs, and was additionally responsible for implementing the new COVID-19 guidance, certifying staff in CPR/AED & First Aid & management of practice schedules.

Prior to his time at SJC, he was a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Long Island University-C.W. Post from 2007-2010, where he worked directly with the men’s soccer, women’s lacrosse, and cross country programs. He provided coverage of the NCAA DII football program in 2007 as a sports medicine intern. He received his master’s degree in public administration in health care from C.W. Post in 2010.

Melendez was an undergraduate student with the athletic training education program at the University of Florida, where he received his bachelor’s degree in athletic training in 2007. As an undergraduate, he assisted with the Gators Women’s Soccer & Cross Country teams.

A Long Island native, Melendez is an active member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association, New York State Athletic Trainer’s Association, Eastern Athletic Trainer’s Association, and the College Athletic Trainer’s Society.
