Strong Start To CAA Play For Hofstra

Hempstead, NY - Emma Johnson and Amy Meadows scored first half goals and the Hofstra defense held off a tenacious Towson attack in the second half as the Pride opened Coastal Athletic Association play with a 2-1 victory over the Tigers Sunday at Captains Field. The Pride played down for the final 10:14 after defender Jess Martin was sent off following her second yellow card of the game.

Hofstra improved to 2-5-2 overall and 1-0 in league play. Towson dipped to 3-4-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the CAA.

The Pride got on the board early off a corner kick as Johnson headed in Marika Svensson's kick for her third goal of the season just 3:43 into the contest. Towson keeper Keagan Williams appeared to make the save, but the ball went through her hands and in.

The Tigers answered just over 12 minutes later as preseason CAA Player of the Year Kale'a Perry sent in a shot from distance over the head of keeper Lilly Bailey, who had come up off her line. The scoring play started in the defensive end as Jaelyn White sent a pass forward that was flicked on by the foot of Sophie Thibeault to Perry, who recorded her third goal of the season.

Meadows put the Pride ahead for good at 34:42 as she converted a penalty kick following Maggie Peterson getting taken down in the box. Meadows sent her kick into the right side of the goal for her team-best fourth of the season.

Towson took 12 shots in the second half and put six on goal. Bailey stopped five and defender Alexia Des Croisselles stopped a shot at the goal line as well.

Hofstra returns to action when it starts a southern road trip at Campbell Thursday night (7 p.m.).
