Final Minute Goal Lifts No. 18 Vermont Over Hofstra

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra and No. 18 Vermont battled for 89:13 without scoring before the Catamounts scored off a corner kick with 47 seconds to play to grab a 1-0 victory over the Pride Tuesday night at a filled to capacity Captains Field. The loss was Hofstra's first of the season.

Hofstra, which dropped out of the national rankings earlier in the day, going from No. 15 to receiving votes, is 4-1-2 on the season. Vermont, which slipped to 18 in the newest coaches poll after being ranked 13 last week, remains unbeaten at 5-0-2.

Hofstra had two golden chances in the first half but could not capitalize. Following great ball movement, the Pride had a clear shot at goal but the ball was not struck well and rolled harmlessly to Vermont keeper Niklas Herceg. The second chance saw Jordan Hoey make a great run into the box and pass the ball off with the ensuing shot sailing high.

Hofstra had another strong chance in the second half but Herceg made a diving save to keep the game scoreless. Vermont made one last push in the final two minutes and forced a corner kick from the right side. Luis Fischer sent the kick into a crowd in front of the goal and Islam Houssni somehow got a right foot on it to send it past Hofstra keeper Milo Risenhoover for the game's only goal.

Risenhoover finished with three saves for the Pride, while Herceg made three stops for Vermont.

Hofstra returns to action Saturday when it hosts Binghamton at 5 p.m. The game is Hofstra's Alumni Day.
