Queens, NY – The Hofstra softball team suffered a 2-0 shutout loss in non-conference action to St. John's on a sunny, blustery afternoon from Red Storm Field. The Pride now sits at 21-16, and St. John's moves up to 26-13 on the year
The Red Storm took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with a single just out of the reach of
Nicole Cancel with runners on first and second. The hosts doubled their lead with an RBI double all the way to the wall in centerfield in the fifth inning. Hofstra had two opportunities to get on the scoreboard with runners on first and second in the fifth and sixth innings, but the team couldn't find a way to bring a runner home in either frame.
Hofstra finished the game with three hits against St. John's, with
Lily Yepez leading the way with two doubles, and
Alanna Morse reaching base safely on an infield single.
Emma Falen took the loss, recording five strikeouts against six hits and two earned runs allowed in 4.2 innings, while
Madison Steppe struck out two St. John's batters in 1.1 innings from the circle.
Hofstra hosts its first home game in a week on Friday at 5 p.m. against Campbell in the first of a three-game CAA series.
NOTES:
-Yepez's two doubles are a new single-game best.
-Hofstra struck 10 times against St. John's. It's the third time this season that Hofstra struck out at least 10 times in a game.
-Hofstra is now 38-8-1 all-time against St. John's. This is the first time St. John's defeated the Pride since 2004.
