Hempstead, NY – In the Hofstra softball team's first game back home this season since the renovations at Bill Edwards Stadium were completed, the Pride suffered a 10-1 defeat to Campbell in five innings in the first of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association series. With its nine-game CAA winning-streak snapped, Hofstra is now 21-17 overall and 14-2 in the league, and Campbell jumps to 24-16 overall and 11-2 in the CAA.
Campbell got off to a hot start with an RBI single up the middle in the opening inning before placing another three on the scoreboard in back-to-back innings; first with three unearned runs off a two-run error and an RBI single in the second inning, followed by a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a two-run outfield single in the third inning. The Fighting Camels scored again in the fourth inning off a wild pitch to make it an 8-0 score.
Chelsea Villar reached second base on a single and outfield error with an out, and she advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Ryleigh Smith drove Villar home on a sacrifice flyout to deep center for the Pride's opening run, but Campbell scored another two runs in the top of the fifth before recording the final three outs of the game.
Villar and
Mackenzie Fitzgerald both finished with two hits against the Fighting Camels, while
Gemma D'Orazio reached base as well with a hit.
Emma Falen pitched two innings with two strikeouts against five runs, while
Jillian Locher pitched two innings as well, and
Casey McKeon saw an inning from the circle and recorded a strikeout.
The series continues on Saturday at 1 p.m.

-This is the first time Campbell has visited Bill Edwards Stadium.
-Hofstra is now 2-3 all-time against Campbell.
-Smith caught a runner stealing at third base in the first inning.
-Hofstra was held to 1-6 with runners in scoring position.
