Stony Brook, NY - The Hofstra softball team powered its way to a doubleheader sweep at Stony Brook on Saturday behind an explosive offensive performance that featured five home runs across the two games. The Pride took game one, 6-1, before completing the sweep with an 8-3 victory in game two. Hofstra improves to 26-18 overall and 18-3 in CAA play with the wins.
Game One: Hofstra 6, Stony Brook 1
Hofstra's offense set the tone early and often in the opener, collecting 11 hits and scoring in four different innings to secure the 6-1 victory.
The Pride broke through in the second inning and never looked back, while the pitching staff limited Stony Brook to just one run in the contest. Hofstra added insurance runs in the middle innings to steadily build its lead.
Ryleigh Smith highlighted the offensive effort with a two-run home run to center field, while
Gemma D'Orazio also launched a two-run homer as part of the Pride's big day at the plate.
Madison Steppe earned the win in the circle, delivering a strong outing while keeping the Seawolves in check throughout the game.
Game Two: Hofstra 8, Stony Brook 3
The Pride carried its momentum into game two, jumping out to an early lead and using a four-run seventh inning to pull away for the 8-3 win and the doubleheader sweep.
Hofstra scored in each of the first three innings to take control, before sealing the victory late with a decisive four-spot in the final frame.
The long ball continued to be a factor for the Pride, as
Mackenzie Fitzgerald,
Nicole Cancel, and D'Orazio each connected on home runs. Fitzgerald opened the scoring with a solo shot, Cancel added another blast, and D'Orazio capped her strong day with her second home run of the doubleheader.
Casey McKeon picked up the win in game two, helping guide Hofstra to its second victory of the afternoon.
Hofstra returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Connecticut for a 4 p.m. contest.Â
