Late Rally Falls Short In One-Run Loss At Charleston

Mount Pleasant, SC - Nick Gallello hit a solo home run and JJ DeVito singled in a run during a two-run ninth inning, but Hofstra's rally fell short in a 5-4 loss at Charleston Sunday. DeVito finished with four hits on the day, including a triple.

Hofstra slipped to 1-8 overall and 1-2 in the CAA with the loss. The Cougars moved to 7-8 overall and 2-1 in league play.

The Pride, which was the designated home team, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Michael Craig's fielder's choice. The Cougars pushed across four runs in the third, taking advantage of two Hofstra errors in the inning. Dylan Johnson had an RBI double and Alex LaCoste added a two-run home run in the frame. Charleston also scored a run on a wild pitch in the inning.

Hofstra opened the fourth inning with a double from Gabriel Melara and a single from Craig to put runners on the corners with no outs. But reliever Kayden Myers came on and escaped the jam by letting up just one run on a ground out from Daniel Escalante

Charleston would tack on a run in the sixth inning on a Stow Rogers home run.

The Pride tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth as Gallello homered with one out to make it a 5-3 game. With two outs, Danny Corona walked followed by an infield single from pinch-hitter Giovanni Bausone. DeVito then delivered a single up the middle to score Corona before the Cougars retired the next batter on a grounder to end the game.

Hofstra starter Nick Reese (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits over six innings. The freshman left-hander walked one and struck out four. Myers (2-1) hurled 4 ⅓ innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits to get the win. Kurt Rogers was credited with the save after pitching the ninth inning.

Hofstra is scheduled to return to action Wednesday when it hosts Rider at 3 p.m.
