Cox Drives In Four As Hofstra Drops Charleston For First Victory

Mount Pleasant, SC - Tyler Cox went 3-5 with three doubles and five RBIs and Daniel Escalante had two hits including his first career home run as Hofstra earned an 8-3 CAA victory over Charleston at Patriots Point. The win was Hofstra's first of the season. 

After falling behind, 2-0, in the first inning, Hofstra (1-7, 1-1 CAA) responded with eight unanswered runs. Cox and Michael Craig had RBI doubles in the third inning to tie the score, and Sam Leonard put the Pride ahead in the fourth with an RBI single. Escalante hit a two-run blast to left field in the fifth to extend the Hofstra lead to 5-2 before Cox closed the scoring in the eighth with a three-run double to right. 

Hofstra starter Chris Bedford struck out six over 4 ⅔ innings but did not factor into the decision. Maddon McArthur (1-0) picked up the win with four innings of one-run relief.

Charleston (6-8, 1-1) starter Jace Stancil (0-3) took the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits over 3 ⅓ innings. Ethan Plyler drove in a pair of runs for the Cougars. 

The teams conclude the series Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch. 

Notes:
-Cox's four RBIs were one shy of his career-best, while his three doubles were a personal high.
-Gabriel Melara, Craig, Escalante, and Leonard each had two-hit games.
-Melara and Escalante extended their hitting streaks to three games.
-Bedford's six strikeouts are a career-high. 
-The win was Hofstra Coach Frank Catalanotto's 99th Pride victory. 
-Hofstra was the designated home team once again.
