Steppe, Morse Lift Hofstra Over Stony Brook In CAA Opener

Farmingdale, NY - Madison Steppe threw a complete game four-hitter, and Alanna Morse drove in both Hofstra runs with a fourth inning single as the Pride picked up a 2-1 CAA victory over Stony Brook Friday afternoon at the Farmingdale State Softball Complex. The game was the conference opener for both schools. Hofstra improved to 4-10 overall with the win, while the Seawolves dipped to 1-13.

Steppe (2-3) allowed a run in the top of the first inning before shutting down Stony Brook the rest of the way. The freshman hurler struck out seven batters in her second complete game of the season.

Stony Brook would take advantage of a throwing error on the back end of an attempted double play turn to put a runner on second with two outs. Two batters later, Ella Hayes doubled in the run to put Stony Brook on top.

In the Hofstra fourth, Nicole Cancel got the rally started with a  one-out double. A single from Gemma D'Orazio put runners on the corners. Following a stolen base and a strikeout, Morse delivered a single past the second baseman to score both runners for a 2-1 lead.

Stony Brook would threaten in the top of the seventh, putting two runners on base via an infield single and a hit batter. However, Steppe got the final out on a called strike three to put an exclamation point on her strong outing.

Hofstra and Stony Brook will continue their series Saturday at 3 p.m. at Farmingdale State.
