Late Goal Lifts Hofstra Over Elon In CAA Opener

Hempstead, NY - Nikki Mennella's goal with 1:20 remaining snapped a 6-6 tie and gave Hofstra a 7-6 victory over Elon Saturday at James M. Shuart Stadium in the CAA opener for both schools. Mennella scored the final two goals for the Pride and added three assists. 

Hofstra moved to 5-4 on the season overall and 1-0 in league play. Elon slipped to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the CAA. 

Kayleigh Bender opened the scoring at the 7:50 mark with a free position goal to start a three-goal spurt for the Pride. Natalie Bender scored from Mennella with 5:04 to go. Bender closed the run with her second off a pass from Jordyn Poll with 1:56 left in the first.

The second quarter was all Elon as the Phoenix scored four times. Gwen Eilender, Anna Hackett, Lillian Austin, and Mackenzie Coleman each scored as Elon took a 4-3 lead into halftime. 

Hofstra came out of the locker room with two goals to open the third quarter. Kristen Redding scored at 2:57 and Kate Lemery found the net at 7:40 to give the Pride a 5-4 lead. Mennella assisted on both scores. Austin tied the game for Elon with 5:24 remaining in the quarter.

The score remained tied until 5:39 remained in the fourth quarter when Lemery found Mennella on the right side and the Pride star ripped an absolute laser beam into the upper corner. Lizzie Scalzo tied the game again with a free position goal with 1:59 to play to set up the exciting finish for the Pride. Good ball movement around the perimeter led to Julia Harris feeding Mennella and the senior finished for her 30th goal of the season. 

Luchianna Cardello made seven saves for the Pride , while Caitlin Walsh stopped eight shots for the Phoenix. 

Hofstra is back in action Wednesday night when it hosts Princeton at 7 p.m.

Notes:
-Hofstra leads the series, 6-4
-Hofstra is 12-11 in CAA openers
-Hofstra was playing its first game at Shuart Stadium following a turf replacement project that was delayed due to unusually harsh winter weather.
-Christine Dannenfelser and Cardello each picked up four ground balls. 
-Mennella added three ground balls and three caused turnovers. 
-The Pride were 16-19 on clears compared to 15-23 for Elon.
