Hofstra Drops Close Game In Series Opener At Monmouth

West Long Branch, NJ - Hofstra banged out 11 hits with Nick Biddle, Nick Gallello, Tyler Cox, CJ Griggs, and Tyler Castrataro each collecting two, but Monmouth scored three runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead and held on for a 5-4 CAA victory over the Pride Friday at MU Baseball Field. 

Hofstra dropped to 2-9 overall and 1-3 in the CAA with the loss. Monmouth is 7-7 overall and 4-0 in league play. 

The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning as RJ Mustaro homered and a second run scored on a fielding error. The Pride got a run back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Biddle and then took the lead with two runs in the sixth. Gabriel Melara had a RBI groundout to tie the score at 2 ahead of a go-ahead single from Cox. 

Monmouth would score three times in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. Chris Walsh led off the inning with a solo home run. Will Fahey would add a sac fly, and Colin Richter an RBI bunt single. Hofstra made it a one-run game in the top of the seventh as Biddle led off with a single and later came in to score on Griggs' opposite field single to left. 

But the Pride could not get the equalizer and closer David Horvath notched his third save, striking out two in the ninth.

Grady Lacourciere (0-2) took the loss for Hofstra, getting charged with three runs on a hit and two walks without recording an out in the sixth.

The teams return for game two of the series Saturday at 1 p.m.

Notes:
-Carlos Martinez made his first start since opening weekend and struck out five batters in 2-plus innings.
-Monmouth left 11 runners on base, while Hofstra stranded 10.
-Hofstra is 11-13-1 all-time against Monmouth.
-Monmouth has won six games in a row.
