Late Rally Lifts Liberty Over Hofstra

Lynchburg, VA - Liberty scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to snap a 5-5 tie and then held off a ninth-inning Hofstra rally to post a 10-7 victory over the Pride Sunday at Worthington Field at Liberty Baseball Stadium. The win completed a three-game sweep for the Flames. Liberty moved to 7-3 on the season, while the Pride dropped to 0-6.

JJ Devito paced the Hofstra offense with three hits, while Daniel Escalante had two hits. Tyler Cox had a hit and two RBIs.

With the score tied at five, the Flames Jaxon Sorenson led off the eighth inning with a solo home run. The Pride recorded two outs before the Flames loaded the bases. A hit batsman drove in the seventh run ahead of a bases-clearing double from Riley DeCandido made it 10-5.

The Pride staged a two-out rally of their own as DeVito was hit by a pitch, advanced to second via defensive indifference and came home on a single by Cox. After Cox took second, CJ Griggs singled him home to close the scoring.

Tanner Sanderoff (0-1) took the loss for the Pride, allowing four runs on two hits over 1 ⅔ innings. Tyler August (1-0) was credited with the win for Liberty, allowing a run on two hits over 2 ⅓ innings.

Hofstra is scheduled to return to action at Marist on Wednesday.
