Preston Edmead continued his spectacular rookie campaign as he had 23 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists to lead the Hofstra men's basketball team to a convincing 80-63 win over Northeastern on Thursday evening at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The point total was one off Edmead's career-high, while the rebound total marked a new career-high, and the assist mark tied his career-high.
Cruz Davis added 16 points and eight assists in the contest, falling one assist shy of his career-high in assists.
Joshua DeCady returned from injury and scored 12 of his 15 points in the first half as the Pride led by 13 at the break.
Hofstra won its second consecutive contest and improved to 15-9 overall and 6-5 in league play. Northeastern dropped to 6-16 and 2-9 in the conference.
The Pride led wire-to-wire as Hofstra jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the game, including a three-pointer from Edmead at the 16:10 mark that gave the home squad the early eight-point advantage. Northeastern did rally to tie the score but Hofstra immediately used an 8-0 run to open up a 20-12 lead and the Pride would score the final five points of the opening stanza to lead 41-28 at the break.
Hofstra cruised in the second half as the lead never dipped into single digits. The Pride pushed the lead to 15 with just under 13 minutes left in regulation and were never challenged from there in improving to 6-2 at home this season.
Victory Onuetu had 12 rebounds, one off his career-high, and added six points and two blocked shots.
German Plotnikov chipped in with 10 points for the Pride.
Ryan Williams led Northeastern with 17 points, while Xavier Abreu added 16. William Kermoury had 12 points, eight rebounds, and five assists for the Huskies.
Hofstra out-rebounded Northeastern, 41-24, in the game and had a 14-3 advantage on the offensive glass.
Hofstra is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Towson on Winter Homecoming Saturday. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the game will air nationally on the CBS Sports Network. NOTES
- Hofstra improved to 33-27 all-time against Northeastern. The Pride has won seven of the last nine and 10 of the last 14 meetings in the series.
- Edmead's previous career-high in rebounds was eight at Stony Brook on January 15. This marked the second consecutive game he has tallied eight assists and it is the third time this season.
- Davis reached double figures in scoring for the 23rd time this season, Edmead for the 20th time, Plotnikov for the ninth time, and DeCady for the sixth time.
- Onuetu reached double figures in rebounding for the seventh time this season. He leads the Pride in that category.
