Hofstra Drops Series Opener At Liberty

Lynchburg, VA - CJ Griggs and Tyler Cox had RBI doubles, but the Flames rallied from a 2-0 deficit to post a 7-2 victory in the opening game of a three-game series at Worthington Field at Liberty Baseball Stadium Friday evening. Hofstra dropped to 0-4 on the season with the loss, while Liberty improved to 5-3 with its third consecutive win.

Hofstra got on the board in the top of the first as Michael Brown drew a leadoff walk and came in on Griggs' two-out double. The Pride took advantage of another leadoff walk in the third as JJ DeVito drew the free pass and later came in on Cox's two-base hit.

The Flames tied the game in the third without a hit as a walk, two hit batters, a sac fly and a throwing error produced a pair of runs in the frame. Liberty would take the lead for good in the fourth with two more. Tanner Marsh and Riley DeCandido each had RBI doubles. Liberty added another run in the fifth and two more in the eighth to close the scoring.

Liberty starter Ben Blair (2-1) struck out a career-high 12 batters over seven innings to get the win. Josh Swink went the final two innings for his first save. DeCandido finished 3-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Hofstra starter Sean Hamilton (0-2) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits over 3 ⅔ innings.

Game two of the series will take place Saturday at 2 p.m.
