Hofstra Erupts For 19 Goals In Win Over Manhattan

Hempstead, NY - Nikki Mennella led eight Hofstra goal scorers with six and Kayleigh Bender added four as Hofstra posted a 19-5 victory over Manhattan Wednesday afternoon at Captains Field. Mennella added two assists on the day to finish with eight points. 

The victory was Hofstra's first of the season and moved the Pride's record to 1-1. The Jaspers dropped to 0-2 with the loss. 

Hofstra and Mennella wasted little time in setting the tone. The Pride senior opened the scoring just 42 seconds into the game with an unassisted tally. She followed with a second goal 46 seconds later for a 2-0 lead. The Pride would build the lead to 5-0 as Natalie DeMeo scored from Julia Harris with 12:52 on the clock, Mennella completed her hat trick with 10:13 showing as she converted a pass from Jordyn Poll, and Bender closed the run with 7:39 to go in the first quarter off a feed from DeMeo.

After Manhattan's Julia Kerr scored with 6:40 to go in the opening 15 minutes, the Pride went on another run (11-0) that lasted well into the third quarter to extend the lead to 16-1 with 2:55 to play in the third. Mennella had three more goals and two assists in the outburst, while Bender had three goals and an assist. 

Luchianna Cardello made six saves in goal for the Pride over the first 44:11 of play, allowing one goal. Avery Lanzarotta came on to play the final 15:49 and had two saves.Evin Terzioglu and Brighid Smith had four ground balls to lead Hofstra, while Mennella had seven draw controls. Terzioglu also forced three turnovers. 

Manhattan keeper Sophie Pasnak made 10 saves, while Ella Brunette paced the offense with two goals. 

Hofstra returns to action Saturday at Quinnipiac with a 12 p.m. start time.

Notes:
-The 19 goals were the most for the Pride since scoring 22 against Monmouth on April 12, 2024.
-The 14 goal victory margin was the largest since a 15-goal margin against Monmouth (22-7) on April 12, 2024.
-Hofstra is 4-0 all-time against Manhattan.
-The Pride has won six consecutive home openers.
-Mennella moved into 10th place on the Hofstra career goals list with 123, 10th place on the career assists list with 57, and ninth place on the career points list with 180. 
-Bender matched her career-high with four goals and five points.
-DeMeo, Cece Thurmond, and Maggie Turco each notched their first career goals in the contest. 
-Hofstra held a 38-18 advantage in shots.
