Hofstra Battles Georgia Tech in Season-Opening Defeat

Atlanta, GA – Four members of the Hofstra women's basketball team finished in double-figures in their season debuts as the Pride put up a valiant effort in an 80-65 defeat against Georgia Tech from McCamish Pavilion in the 2026-27 season openers for both teams.

Kelian Cedano paced Hofstra with 15 points plus seven rebounds, three steals, and a pair of assists, while Angel Jones and Ema Karim finished with 11 points each, and Comari Mitchell scored 10 against the Yellow Jackets. Jones and Mitchell both dished out five assists to tie for the team lead.

Georgia Tech opened the game on a 7-0 run before Jones got the Pride on the scoreboard with a midrange jumper three minutes into the opening quarter. The Georgia Tech lead ballooned to 15 with a 12-2 run midway through the quarter, but Cedano scored the next eight points to cut the deficit to seven after a driving layup with 1:12 left in the quarter. Georgia Tech put the lead back in double-digits with three straight points, but Mitchell knocked down a corner three as time expired to put the difference at eight points.

After Georgia Tech outscored Hofstra 24-14 in the second quarter to lad 47-29 at halftime, the Georgia Tech lead grew to as large as 23 points with a 7-2 run to open the third quarter. With the difference at 23 with 7:25 left in the quarter, a layup and free throw by Jones at the 7:04 mark kicked off a run of 14 unanswered Hofstra points to close the gap to nine points. Allie Broadus was responsible for seven of those 14 points, including five points on back-to-back Hofstra possessions, to get the Pride within nine of the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech ended the Hofstra run with a three at 1:51, but a pair of Jones free throws at the end of the quarter put the Pride down 10. The Pride cut the deficit to eight points twice in the early stages of the fourth quarter, but Georgia Tech pulled away with a 9-3 run heading into the media timeout before holding off Hofstra for the win.

Georgia Tech's Talayah Walker led all players with 40 points in the win, while La'Nya Foster was the leading rebounder with nine for the Yellow Jackets.
